Filming our Trip

One challenge that we've been faced with is how to film our upcoming trip. We originally discussed helmet cams because of their size and versatility. But because helmet cams are merely peripheral units, they require a recording device, i.e., camcorder (negating the advantage of a helmet cam's size). The good news is that Peter already owns a camcorder. The bad news is that I do not. However, in researching helmet cams, we soon discovered that not all camcorders are compatible with all helmet cams. There is still the possiblity that Peter's camcorder will not work with the helmet cam that we deem acceptable. So this could potentially be bad news for Peter as well. In addition to purchasing 2 helmet cams, we could potentially be looking at buying 2 new camcorders. It begs the question, do we really need helmet cams? Once the trip is over, how much use will we really get out of them? (But man, are they cool!)

Although we haven't ruled out helmet cams, we have shelved that issue for the time being. We are exploring the idea of simply mounting our camcorders to our bikes directly using mounting products from PanaVise, Ram Mount, or Ztechnik, for example, or even fabricating a custom mount. Now that the riding season is upon us, we will soon be experimenting with mounting the camcorder in lieu of helmet cams as a viable alternative.

Keep in mind that our intention is to bring you our experiences on a daily basis. This poses a whole new problem - one of editing and uploading video files to our blog. We are not traveling with a camera crew. We are the camera crew. I anticipate it will be quite the undertaking to have the energy at the end of each day of riding to faithfully post blogs, photos and videos. Therefore, the solution to our filming and mounting dilemma will have to be as simple in the post production process as well!

I'm commenting on my own blog so I don't have to create a new post about the same thing...

In researching possible camcorder mounts, I found that the cost of doing it right is within $100 of some helmet cam systems. Because a helmet cam is twice as versatile and half as invasive to the bike, the argument in favor of the helmet cam seems pretty overwhelming. I'm pretty convinced that will be the way I will go. I just need to research the cams to be certain the resolution, for instance, is any good. You get what you pay for, but sometimes you just don't need the best of the best to get the job done.
